Teaching Pedagogy

My teaching style has two very simple aspects : appreciate the science and practice makes perfect.

As the assessment methods start shifting away from rote memorisation and pure reiteration of definitions and formula, it becomes less important to remember answer keys but more important to recognise patterns, find information from the questions / preamble given and apply what you already know to new situations. This can be largely achieved through appreciating the science, taking it with an open mind rather than confining yourself that there can only be one way to think about it. In many cases, phenomena exist based on relative considerations, what does it mean to be a "good reactant", or a "high boiling point" ? These do not mean much if we cannot answer what is the meaning of "good" or "high". Rather, we can say compare the properties of A and B and then proceed to suggest which is better / higher.

Practice definitely makes perfect, it is not really in the "remembering the correct way to answer the question" but to expose yourself to different scenarios, different possibilities. In that way, the student is able to assess whether they are able to link what new knowledge is presented to them to something they have already learnt before. The purpose of assessments and evaluation is to understand how much of the material, stated in the syllabus and learning outcomes, the student is able to grasp.

Regardless, as I understand that different students have different learning styles and different backgrounds, I try my best to follow the principle of 因材施教 (to teach according to the student's ability), and will work together with the student and parents where necessary. While I am not saying that results are not important, my main goals would be to have my student improve, and appreciate the subject matter better.
